Ringette Nova Scotia is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Graduate Awards, and the third annual Gary Field Memorial Scholarship.
Gary Field Memorial Scholarship:
Rebecca Haworth
Rebecca has been involved in ringette as a player with the Bedford Ringette Association since the age of five, and has added both officiating and coaching to her list of activities for the past four seasons. In addition to her dedication to ringette as an athlete and volunteer, she also competes in track and field at a national and international level, and volunteers as a coach with the Bedford Sackville Special Olympics aquatics team. Rebecca plans to remain involved in sport as she begins her post-secondary education this fall, and hopes to earn extra income to help pay for her schooling through ringette officiating.
Ringette Nova Scotia's 2010 Graduate Award recipients are:
Julia Cunningham
As a member of Halifax/Chebucto Ringette Association, Julia has eleven years involvement in ringette to her credit as a player at both the recreational and provincial level. Julia has spent the last three years officiating and giving back to the sport as a volunteer for numerous Come Try Ringette events, and has also worked the past two seasons as a Junior Instructor at the Ringette Nova Scotia Summer Skills Camp. In the coming year Julia will be beginning her education at Acadia University where she will be studying Kinesiology and possibly getting a new ringette team started.
Lauren Morse
Ringette has played a big role in Lauren's life, and she feels that "it's all about how much you put into it, and how hard you work when it doesn't matter." In August 2009, Lauren helped Team Canada East win a silver medal at the U19 World Ringette Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. During the tournament she was named Most Valuable Player for one of the games. This past season Lauren played on the Berwick and District Ringette Association U19 team which won the 2010 Provincial Championship, and the Nova Scotia Provincial AA U19 team which she captained. In 2010 Lauren was named the Ringette Nova Scotia Athlete of the Year, and most recently she was named a member of Nova Scotia's Canada Winter Games team which will compete in Halifax in 2011.
Krista Vey
Currently serving as the Athlete Representative on the RNS Board of Directors, Krista's ringette involvement is extensive and varied. A player of 12 years for Sackville Ringette Association, she has also been a member of Nova Scotia Provincial Teams for the past 6 years. She has volunteered with her home association to help develop U9 and U10 players, and has been a referee for three years. Krista's other sports involvement includes participation on the Millwood High School hockey and soccer teams, and recreational soccer during the summer. In the fall Krista plans to attend Dalhousie Univeristy and play ringette in the 18+ division. She also plans to continue volunteering for the Sackville U9 and U10 programs whenever time allows.
